From 30 June to 3 July 2027, Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, will welcome scholars from across the world for the 11th European Conference of African Studies (ECAS2027): African Prisms.

Lisbon has established itself as one of the world’s leading destinations for international conferences and professional events. Recognized by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) as the top global city for international association meetings in 2025, Lisbon combines world-class event infrastructure with a vibrant cultural and scientific environment.

Beyond the conference venue, the city offers delegates a unique experience: a safe, welcoming and highly accessible destination, rich in history, culture and gastronomy. From its iconic neighbourhoods and riverside atmosphere to nearby beaches and natural landscapes, Lisbon provides an inspiring setting for academic exchange and international networking.

ECAS2027 invites participants to exchange ideas in a city known for its creativity and conviviality – please join us in Lisbon for four days of scholarship, dialogue, and celebration at the crossroads of Africa and Europe.

The theme of ECAS 2027 is “African Prisms”. It aims to speak to the multiplicity of disciplines, perspectives, methods, histories, and images that shape the contemporary study of Africa. At its essence, a prism refracts light, revealing a spectrum where once appeared unity.

Call for papers is now open. Before proposing a paper, please read the conference theme, the rules, and then browse the list of panels.
