Nigel Smart, PhD, is a keynote and motivational speaker, executive mentor, and high-performance strategist with more than 39 years of industry experience spanning pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, operations, compliance, regulatory strategy, and organizational performance. He is the founder and leader of Smart Pharmaceutical Consulting, where he leads a professional team providing expertise in process excellence, quality compliance, regulatory affairs, training, product and process development, manufacturing, laboratory services, and project management. His work focuses on helping organizations develop efficient, compliant, and high-performance operational systems while strengthening productivity and organizational effectiveness. Throughout his career, Dr. Smart has contributed to several significant achievements in pharmaceutical and biotechnology operations. These include serving as a key consultant and Vice President of Operations in the effort to re-establish Biothrax vaccine production at BioPort following the 9/11 attacks, where the vaccine production achieved a 100% success rate during his assignment. He has also designed and patented novel bioreactors for cell-culture products, established one of the pioneering plant-cell drug production processes, and developed approaches for integrating lean upstream and downstream manufacturing operations. His technical expertise includes fermentation and cell culture of vaccines and recombinant products, lean biomanufacturing, lean laboratory analysis, biological and chemical countermeasures, biological product development and licensure, FDA liaison and inspection readiness, quality systems, strategic analysis, commercial licensure strategy, and CMO capability assessment. Beyond his technical and corporate work, Dr. Smart is dedicated to leadership development and high-performance habits in both personal and organizational environments. He provides mentoring, group coaching, mastermind programs, executive training, and practical strategies designed to improve individual and organizational performance. He is also a bestselling author in operations and relationship strategies and hosts The Unshakeable Voice Podcast. Dr. Smart holds an Honours BSc in Chemistry from the University of Leicester, an MSc in Microbial/Fermentation Technology and a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Manchester. He is a Chartered Chemist and Chartered Scientist, and is associated with professional organizations including the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA), International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), Institute of Biology, and Institution of Chemical Engineers.
